A family trip to New York led me to discovering one of my favorite Irish bars I’ve visited. While they rest of the family decided they wanted to go see all the sights New York had to offer, me and another buddy decided to see how many bars we could hit in the 3 hour time span we had before dinner. This led to us going on Google maps and finding random spots, and stopping in at any bars along the way. With us on a time restraint, it was one beer at each bar and then head to the next. This changed after we walked into Flannery’s and we knew we found something special.
Walking in the first thing you notice is that it is a Tottenham Hotspur (soccer) bar. Scarves and memorabilia completely cover the walls. But don’t worry if soccer isn’t your thing. There’s plenty of TVs showing all sports, and enough beer or liquor selection to keep you occupied. The bar and walls are wood, giving it that classic bar feeling. There’s something about a wood bar that makes me feel something special. I remember seeing pictures of my family at some of their favorite bars, and they all had the wood look. Makes me feel like I found one of the great bars that they always discuss. I was surprised that when we walked into Flannery’s that we were the only patrons. It was 2pm on a Sunday, so maybe New Yorkers are just soft and don’t party or know when they have a gem off a bar to drink at for Sunday Funday. This did make for a cool experience as we got to talk with the bartender. She told us her story and how she was born and raised in Ireland. Think it was the first Irish bar I have been to that actually had someone from Ireland working it. She also gave us insight that the bar is an absolute blast during Tottenham games, and that the place gets completely packed with fans.
I was a little bummed there were not more people in the bar. The stories made it sound like such a fun place, and I felt like I was missing out on an experience with it being empty. It did provide us with a cool chance to connect with the bartender and hear her life experiences from Ireland and how she ended up in New York.
We ended up breaking our one beer rule and stayed for 3-4. Did we potentially miss out on some other great bars? Very likely. But do I care? No. Because this was easily one of my favorite bars we visited on the trip. I have absolutely no desire to visit New York again. But a small part of me feels like I need to go back when a game is occurring and get to see this bar in all its glory. If you ever do find yourself in the Big Apple, make sure you stop in and check out Flannery’s.
Decor: Wall to Wall covered in Tottenham Hotspurs decor. Also wood paneling and a full wood bar make this feel like a classic spot that has history.
Price: Relatively cheap for New York. Are there places that are cheaper? Probably. Are there places more expensive? Absolutely.
Service: Service was awesome. Being the only ones in the bar, the bartender engaged in conversation with us the entire team. Walked in as strangers, left as friends. (No chance I remember her name)
Atmosphere: Feel like going at the time and day we did we missed out on the real experience this bar. While it was still very fun talking with the bartender and hearing stories about the bar, it just wasn’t the same not being able to see it all live.
Cleanliness: Clean. Zero concern for your health.
Bonus Points: None.
