When I close my eyes and map out my ideal college bar, Crown & Anchor Pub is what I envision. From the moment I walked into the bar, I knew it was special. This bar has been serving Austin since 1987 and is in a prime location within the city. Overwhelmed by the amount of neon lights, I blacked out for a second before the bartender asked me for a third time what I would like to drink. Once I got focused, I of course ordered my tried and true, Miller Lite. While I got an ice-cold Miller, this place had a hell of a beer selection. I mean seriously they had to have had 25+ beers available. It was very impressive. Beyond the beer selection, as mentioned, the place had unreal amounts of signage. You name the beer, and they had a great neon for it. I do not think they technically had a light on because with that many neon’s you do not need to. Just like Big Daddy, the Crown & Anchor utilized neon’s as their nightlights.
The next thing I noticed was the seating. Boy, there was a ton of it. This is one thing that most college bars tend to lack, not the Crown & Anchor though. The space inside was awesome. To accompany this space they also had a few pool tables, dart boards, and plenty of T.Vs. Seriously, not sure what there isn’t to like about this bar. Once you walk out of the bar you are greeted by even more seating. The outdoor area is where I sat during my visit and this part of the bar was badass. The signage was carried outdoors, and they had even more TVs. I couldn’t imagine watching a game at this bar, the atmosphere has to be electric.
Unfortunately, my trip to this bar was rather short as I had many others to hit that day, even though it was early in the day there was a decent size crowd and a very nice staff. This is the type of bar that is welcoming from the moment you walk in and a place that you could easily spend all day at and not get bored.
Also, I’d be doing a disservice if I did not mention their logo. This bar has an awesome logo on most of their tables and throughout the place. One of the neatest logos we have come across.
If you are in Austin and want to take a break from all the bars on 6th Street, visit this one, you will be glad you did.
