Alright, post 1. You may be wondering, why would two 25-year-old guys suddenly start a blog? We thought others may be interested in hearing opinions about different bars across the country and what factors we think go into making a great bar. I will state this from the start, Ethan and I like dives. We are simple guys, with even simpler taste in bars. Do not misinterpret a dive bar for a shithole, there is a fine line between both of these, and we have experienced this, firsthand. If you appreciate a good dive, pub, or bar, this is the blog for you.
So how did this idea start? A few Miller Lites in New Orleans spurred this drunken idea and we decided it was still a plausible idea come morning. Growing up, I rarely watched T.V. I predominantly watched whatever sports my dad had on, except when Guy Fieri or Anthony Bourdain was on T.V. For my dad and I, both of their shows were must-see T.V. The thing about Guy and Anthony is that they were honest, sought out new places, and were not afraid to go off the beaten path for a good meal or bar. What makes these shows the best is that they hold the test of time. Most of the places Guy or Tony went to 10 or 15 years ago still exist and they have not changed much. Before the idea for this blog was conceptualized, I watched one of my favorite Bourdain episodes, A Cooks Tour, “Elements of a Great Bar”. Watching this episode made me discuss with Ethan and other friends on the New Orleans’ trip we took and see what people truly value when it comes to a good bar. What was the consensus? Bar preferences are HIGHLY subjective. Ethan and I share the same taste when it comes to bars. Give us a place with darker lighting, cheap domestics, some neat neon lights, and Touch Tunes and we are good to go for the night. So here, we look to document some bars that we have visited across the United States.
Whether it is athletes, sports teams, or food, dudes like to score stuff, Ethan and I are no different. We will be posting about a bar each week and assigning it a score based on five categories: Décor, prices, service, atmosphere, and cleanliness. Yes, food is not a category, but it will be discussed throughout the posts. Some of the best bars we have visited do not serve food, so we decided it was unfair to make it a metric for our overall scoring. We will be scoring bars and bars only. Whether it is a bar and grille, a pub, or a dive bar, we do not care, we will score it. We will not score breweries, clubs, or places that only accept cards. Seriously, screw card-only establishments. Cash should always be an option for payment.
Now that we have gotten the foundation of the blog out of the way, all posts from here on out will be dedicated to a bar we have been to.
