Post 93: Streeter’s Tavern

Bar: Streeter’s Tavern

Address: 50 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60611

Score: 8.3/10

Streeter’s Tavern, named after the neighborhood that it is in Streetersville, has eluded me for many years. It is in a great location, but for some reason it has always been bad timing and I have not been able to stop in for a pint. That all changed this past November. After a long day of drinking while watching my beloved Chicago Bears, we were looking for a night cap and Streeter’s was nearby. The sign reads “The greatest bar below Earth”. A very fitting sign for a bar that is quite literally in a basement. This was unique for sure. Galway bay in Chicago was also in a basement, but this was the only other bar I’ve seen that has this set-up. Pretty neat if you ask me.

Once we got in the bar, I was shocked by the space. They had not one but two bars, which I’m sure they both have open during crowded periods. The bar had all the bar games one could possibly want, from foosball, to beer pong, to darts, and foosball, they checked all the boxes. The bar also had ample space, tons of high tops and bar seating to go around.

I was an absolute sucker for the decor, there was not too much signage but all the walls were a nice brick, I absolutely love a bar with brick, makes it very cozy and inviting, plus you don’t see it often.

The bar was sweet too, a nice wood, great selection of draft beers, and the iconic money on ceiling of the bar, as we have found at multiple places we’ve visited.

Now to this point everything stated about Streeter’s has been vastly positive. Now here are some of the things I did not love, the prices were crazy. $7 was the cheapest beer on the whole menu and that was for a domestic bottle/can. Look, I know the area is pricey, but we found multiple bars offering domestics at $5 a pop. The second thing I didn’t love was the “card only” policy. Card only did not fit the vibe of this bar, and yeah I know everyone has a card, blah, blah, blah, but cash should be king, right?!

I want to leave it on a positive note, cause all-in-all this is a solid spot. The most unique thing about this bar by far was the men’s bathrooms. Now hear me out, this may sound odd but it is factually true. The bathrooms at the men’s urinals had a two way mirror like you’d see in a movie when they are questioning the suspect. While at the urinal you could see everything happening at the bar but they couldn’t see you. Completely pointless, but awesome.

Price: Very high

Decor: Great cozy decor, tons of brick, wood, the good stuff

Service: Place wasn’t busy when we went but service was still good

Atmosphere: I could see this place buzzing during Bears games.
